The Helping Hand

The setting for this scene is in Brittany, which is a peninsula in northwestern France. Brittany has more good harbors than any other part of France. According to legend it was one of the lands of King Arthur.
Because of all the coast line, many people made their living by fishing. Here we see a fisherman, a grandfather, who is out fishing with his granddaughter.
Maybe she begged to go fishing with Grandfather. She thinks that she is really helping him row the boat. See how hard she is concentrating on the job.
Grandfather, contentedly smoking his pipe, looks at her fondly. He knows that the small strength she has in her arms isn't really much help in rowing the boat. She mainly helps him by her devotion to him, her grandfather.

The Sick Bed
Poverty as well as sickness is presented in this picture which was included at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.
We can determine that the young girl is from a poor family by the surroundings shown in the painting. Her bed is just a simple cot, and a wooden chest has been placed beside the bed to hold the medicine and the Bible. The slant of the ceiling tells us that it is an attic room.
The sympathetic doctor is holding the weak hand of his charity patient and thinking of the seriousness of her situation. He has done all that he can do, and very likely will receive no pay for his services, but his heart is tender and he is willing to help.

Visitors' Day
The setting for this painting is the children's ward at a hospital. Many children were put in the same room to recover from their illnesses. Visitors could come only once a week.
It is a sad visit for this father because his little girl is so ill. Even though we can't see his face, we can tell how anxious he is about her by the way he is looking at her, and by the way his hands are resting on his knees. She is too sick to talk to him or even to look at him.
He has brought her an orange to eat, but she doesn't feel well enough to even eat it yet.
The little fellow in the next bed is recovering and happily greets his brother. We would hope that the next time the father comes, his little girl will be able to respond to him.
